A team of fundraisers will be walking 20 miles while fasting to raise funds for their local mosque.

‘Team Buraq’ is collecting funds for the new mosque just off Devonport Road, which is being built through donations from the local community.

The project has seen inspirational volunteers take part in several sponsored walks and bike rides over the past four years.

Their latest trek will see them walk from Blackburn to Preston and back over the weekend. The team of 15 is hoping to raise £30,000 to go towards the completion of the funeral area.

Tabassam Zabier, who is leading the project, said: "It is going to be a gruelling challenge and it is not going to be easy but with everyone’s support we firmly believe we can do this.

“The reason we are doing this is to complete the mosque project this year.

“Our intentions are to be in the masjid in 2024 and, at present, there are a number of key areas in the building which will bring benefits to the local community.

“We firmly believe together in the month of Ramadan we can hit the £30,000 target.”

Lancashire Telegraph:

The new building is set to replace the Islamic Education Centre based on the corner of Addison Street as the main focal point for prayers and religious activities. The majority of the attendees live around the mosque itself.

The exterior of the mosque has been completed and the interior is also taking shape.

In a message fundraisers said: “The community has long awaited a dedicated space to honour and mourn our departed loved ones with dignity and respect. With your generous support, we can make this vision a reality and provide a comforting space for families during their time of need.”
